“Whoa! What’s that?” Jamie screamed and brought his bicycle to a quick stop. He looked ahead, wide-eyed. Alex noticed the large and strange object which Jamie had saw. It looked like a saucepan, but a very big one, bigger than his house. He let his bicycle fall and he stood there with his mouth wide open.
He tapped Jamie, “come on, let’s check it out.”
“Whoa! Alex let’s not go there,” Jamie said, still clutching his bicycle close to his hip. Jamie was Alex’s best friend; he was seven, Alex was eight. They usually go down the stream which was behind Alex’s house on weekends to build sand castles or throw stones into the stream and watch the ripple spread. They competed for who would make the widest ripple.
“Jamie, come on, are you scared?” Alex dropped his bicycle and held Jamie’s hands.
“Alex wait, I’m scared. What if…”
“Come on, we’re together. There might be a lot of toys in there.” Alex smiled as he pulled Jamie’s arm and walked down the narrow path that led to the river bank where the machine was. Jamie followed reluctantly.
The whirring sound of the large machine grew louder as they got closer. Alex let go of Jamie’s hands causing them to stop. The boys exchanged glances in bewilderment to the machine before them.
The machine was very big; green lights flickered brightly from the top. The body of the machine was very black, but shiny. There were no windows or a visible entrance.
“This is not a house,” Jamie whispered. Alex nodded, still staring.
“How did it get here? Do you think…”
“Shhh!” Alex placed a finger over his mouth. Jamie became quiet. They heard the sound of footstep and turned quickly, both shivering with fear.
They saw a human, no, something that looked like a human. It walked on two legs but its head looked like that of a very big lobster. It had a green skin and its hand had only two fingers – they looked like fingers. Its head glowed like a fluorescent bulb when it saw the kids. Jamie and Alex screamed when they saw it had only one eye.
“Zoom Zaa Zap Zappa Zhumu Zoon Zeus,” it said. The head glowed brilliantly. Alex face turned white. Jamie’s thin legs shook before the strange figure standing in front of him. They didn’t understand anything it said.
“Hello, new human. We are the Greenz.” Alex heard the word in his head, he turned to look at Jamie and he knew he heard it too. Alex realized it was an alien. His father bought him a lot of comic books. The figure before him looked like one of those figures in his book and the machine must be a spaceship.
“We come in peace.” Alex looked around to see if there were other aliens, it was only the green guy.
It seemed like the creature smiled. Alex relaxed a bit. It invited them to check out the machine. Alex was unsure, but he dragged Jamie along again.
Just as Alex was about to walk up the entrance, he felt a pull, then he heard a voice call out his name. He opened his mouth to talk but no words came out. He heard the voice again, followed by a tap on his shoulder. The second tap was heavier.
“Alex! Alex, wake up and dress up for school.” The voice was wobbly at first, then he heard it again. It was his mother’s warm voice.
